Almost all of the pumpkin plants now have pumpkins. Some even have two pumpkins. The only plants that do not have pumpkins are Big Moon and Valenciano. One of the Cinderella Carriage pumpkins is the size of a soccer ball. We had a big rain last week and some of the pumpkin leaves have mold. Grandma sprayed them with an organic fungicide so hopefully the leave will stay healthy until the pumpkins are ready to harvest.

Other Garden Happenings

Havesting Cabbages

Grandma has seven cabbages in her garden. Some are green and some are red. Four of the green cabbabes are ready to harvest. Grandma has picked one that was the size of her head. and used it to make Billy Goats for Grandpa Charlie.

Cranberry Beans

For a second year, Grandma has been growing a bean called Cranberry Bean. The bean pods start out green and then turns streaky red. The pods and the beans dry on the vine. Grandma saves the dried red speckled beans and later will add to recipes. The beans taste like navy beans.

Onions

This year Grandma had a great crop of onions. The stalks of the onions are starting to tip and dry out. This is a sign that the onions are ready to harvest.

Late Summer Flowers

There are quite a few plants that flower in late summer in Grandma's Garden, including purple morning glories, red hardy hibiscus, purple Joe Pye weed, hydrangeas, zinnias, ornamental onion, cosmos, and dahlias.
